FAQs
What is home dialysis?
Home dialysis is a treatment option for patients with kidney failure, allowing them to perform dialysis treatments at home instead of traveling to a clinic or hospital. It provides greater flexibility and control over your treatment schedule. Vitality Dialysis supports both self-care and staff-assist care models.
What home treatments options are available?
(1) Home Hemodialysis (HHD): Uses a machine and dialyzer (artificial kidney) to filter your blood outside your body, similar to in-center hemodialysis, but performed at home. Accepted vascular access types: CVC (catheter), AV fistula, AV graft.
**COMING SOON**
(2) Peritoneal dialysis (PD): uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) to filter waste and excess fluids from your blood. A cleansing solution, called dialysate, is introduced into your abdomen through a catheter, and as it absorbs waste products, it’s later drained out and replaced with fresh solution. Accepted access: PD catheter only.
Am I a candidate for home dialysis?
There are several important factors to consider when determining if home dialysis is right for you:
(1) Medical Condition: You need to consider your over-all stability and health to manage home dialysis. Ask your family, friends, and nephrologist to help evaluate your suitability for home hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis based on your medical history and condition.
(2) Self-Management at home: Home dialysis requires you and/or a care partner to be comfortable handling equipment and supplies, monitoring your own treatments, and routinely collaborating with your dialysis care team.
(3) Lifestyle and Independence: Home dialysis offers treatment flexibility, including when and how much you dialyze. This freedom and autonomy are ideal for patients who want more control over their treatments and the liberty to continue working, traveling, or engaging in hobbies.
(4) Home Environment: You’ll need a clean, safe space to perform dialysis and store the necessary supplies. For home hemodialysis, you’ll also need a reliable water source, electricity, and internet.
(5) Support System: Having a strong support system, like family or friends, can help you manage home dialysis more effectively, though some patients prefer to perform treatments independently.
What are the benefits of home dialysis?
Some benefits include:
- Greater flexibility to dialyze when it's convenient for you
- Ability to dialyze in the comfort of your own home
- Flexible on-demand dialysis structure, allowing for additional or extended treatments as necessary
- No traveling to dialysis clinics - alleviating time, cost, and scheduling burdens
- Greater freedom with diet and fluid intake
- Reduced infection risk compared to busy clinic exposure
- Fewer hospitalizations
- Improved blood pressure control with customized in-home treatment plan
How long does training take?
Training duration varies depending on the type of dialysis, and the availability of the patient and care partner to train. Most patients complete training in about 3 weeks. Your training will ensure you feel comfortable and confident in performing your home treatments.
